Abstract

This study aims to identify the survival strategies of farmers after shifting their livelihoods from rubber farming to oil palm farming in Air Sebayur Village, Pinang Raya District, North Bengkulu Regency. This research employs a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, which means choosing informants based on certain considerations. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that there are four survival strategies adopted by farmers after transitioning from rubber farming to oil palm farming in Air Sebayur Village, namely: seeking additional employment, gradually converting land use, participating in rotating savings and credit associations (arisan), and applying a frugal lifestyle. These four strategies enable farmers to meet their daily living needs during the waiting period before oil palm plantations begin to produce yields. The findings are analyzed using Action Theory proposed by Robert Hinkle. The analysis shows that farmers who shift from rubber farming to oil palm farming are consciously aware that their income decreases compared to before and is insufficient to meet their needs. Since farmers have various life goals related to fulfilling basic needs, they develop strategies to survive and sustain their livelihoods. In order to maintain their survival, given that they lack skills outside farming and do not possess adequate formal education to work in other sectors, they decide to engage in informal sectors that match the skills they have mastered.
