Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, often leading to ineffective airway clearance due to excessive secretions. One recommended nursing intervention to support secretion mobilization is the effective cough technique. This case study aims to analyze the implementation of effective cough techniques in three pediatric pulmonary tuberculosis patients at the Pediatric Clinic of Tiara Sella Hospital Bengkulu in 2025. The study employed a case study design following the nursing care process consisting of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and physical examinations. The results showed that all patients experienced ineffective airway clearance characterized by non-productive cough, increased respiratory rate, and difficulty in expectorating sputum. After three days of implementing the effective cough technique, improvements were observed in cough effectiveness, optimal secretion removal, clearer breath sounds, and overall patient comfort. The study concludes that the effective cough technique is beneficial in improving airway clearance in pediatric pulmonary tuberculosis patients and can be recommended as a fundamental nursing intervention for respiratory problems in children.
