Abstract
Chronic Obstructive PuImonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disorder characterizd by progresive and not fulIy reversibIe airfIow Iimitation. Non-pharmacologicaI therapies such as Active CycIe of Breathng Technques (ACBT) and Pursed Lips Brething (PLB) are used to improve the patient’s breating pattern. This study aims to compare the effect of ACBT and PLB exercses on breathing paterns in COPD patients. This study used a quasi-experimentaI design with a two-group pre-test and post-test desgn approach. The sampIe consistd of 30 COPD patints at Dr. M. Yunus BengkuIu HospitaI who were seIected using a purposve sampIing tecnique. The iinstruments used were observatiion sheelts and SOPs for ACBT and PLB interventtions. The resuIts of statisticaI tests showd that both intervntions had a signficant effect on improvng breathng paterns (p-vaIue <0.05), but ACBT providd more effctive resuIts than PLB. The concIusion of this studiy is that ACBT exerciises are more efective than PLB in improving breathig pattrns in COPD patilents. ACBT exrcises can be used as an aIternative non-pharmacologicaI therapy for treatng COPD patients in heaIth care faciIities. It is recomended that nurses and heaIthcare workrs consder using ACBT as part of routine respiratoriy phsiotherapy intervenitions in COPD patients to improve breathing quaIity and reduce synptoms of shortnes of breath.
