Abstract

The city of Bengkulu in Indonesia is very likely to be affected by natural disasters, especially earthquakes and tsunamis. Two important things during a disaster are how prepared each family is and how much fear they experience. This study was done to see if being ready as a family and feeling worried when earthquakes and tsunamis happen are connected in the Pasar Berkas area of Bengkulu city. The method used in this research is by calculating and explaining according to the current conditions. There are 59 families that were used as samples, chosen using a method called purposive sampling. The tools used include a questionnaire about family readiness to face disasters and an instrument called Use the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) to figure out how anxious someone is. The data was calculated using a test called the Likelihood Ratio Test. Many people rated themselves as 'not yet ready' (40.7%) in terms of preparedness and 'quite scared' (54.2%) in terms of anxiety levels. The Likelihood Ratio Test results showed a value of 0.102, which is more than 0.05, so there is no real link between how ready families are and how worried they get when natural disasters happen.. There is no significant numerical relationship between family preparedness and fear levels. Other methods, such as learning about social issues and mental readiness, are needed so that people are not only equipped with tools but also strong-hearted when facing natural disasters.
