THE LACK OF STUDENTS’ PRIOR KNOWLEDGE IN WRITING CITATION ON INTRODUCTION SECTION BASED ON APA STYLE

Abstrak

This research aimed to find out what are the lack of students’ prior knowledge in writing citation on introduction section based on APA style. Researcher used Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 7th edition 2020. This research used a qualitative method. The object of the research was 25 introduction section in theses written by English students of Muhammadiyah of Bengkulu in academic year 2021 period II. Researcher used table checklist as the instrument of the research. To data collecting technique, researcher borrowed and copied introduction section in theses from the library, English study program, and the participants. The results of this research are: first, in writing indirect citation students paraphrases are well, but students did not write last name (surname) of the authors, students did not use an ampersand in parenthetical citation and narrative citation, students did not write “et al.” when the authors’ name is more than two, students did not write “as cited in” when the citation taken in other researchers, incorrectly in writing year of publication, students did not write comma between the author name, year of publication, page number and they did not write period at the end of citation. second, in writing direct citation fewer than 40 students have quoted well, but did not write the last name of the authors, symbol “p” for page number, year of publication, and quotation marks. Third, did not notice how much words that cited (direct citation more than 40 words). And it is suggested for the students to learn how to cite in-text citation on introduction section of theses properly and correctly.
