Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) cases worldwide are still a major health concern. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), every year, more than 570,000 children under the age of 5 die from respiratory diseases. The researcher's initial survey found 379 infants 1-5 years old in the Muara Bangkahulu health centre working area. This indicates that young children in this area are at high risk of developing acute respiratory infections (ARI). This study aims to determine the effectiveness of health education with the socratic method (demonstration) on the knowledge of parents of toddlers on ispa disease in the working area of Muara Bangkahulu health centre. This study used a quantitative approach with experimental pre-post test research design and the sample in this study were parents in the Muara Bangkahulu health centre working area according to the inclusion criteria, namely 30 respondents. The research instrument used was a closed questionnaire consisting of respondents' personal data and statements related to ARI. The results obtained after health education with the socratic demonstration method were that 29 respondents had good knowledge (96.7%) and a small proportion of respondents had sufficient knowledge, namely 1 person (3.3%). The knowledge data obtained and then processed using SPSS version 29 shows that the significance value obtained is 0.001, which is smaller than the previously set significance level α = 0.05. From these results, it can be concluded that there is a real and significant difference between the level of knowledge before (pre-test) and after (post-test) given a health education intervention with the socratic method (demonstration).
