Abstract

Mental retardation is a condition characterized by low intelligence that causes individual's inability to learn and adapt to society's demands for abilities that are considered normal. This study aims to study relationship between parenting styles and level of independence of mentally retarded children at the State Extraordinary School (SLB) 5 of Bengkulu City. The design of this research is an analytic survey with a cross sectional design method in which independent variable (Parenting Pattern) and dependent variable (Level of Independence of Mentally Retarded Children) are measured or collected together. The study population was 34 parents. The sampling technique used in this study is Total Sampling. After the analysis, it can be seen that from 8 parents with authoritarian parenting, there are 7 children who are quite independent and 1 child is independent. From 10 parents with permissive parenting, there are 3 children who are quite independent and 7 children who are independent. Of the 16 parents with democratic parenting, 6 children are quite independent and 10 children are independent. The results of the Chi-Square statistical test (Person Chi Square) obtained a value of 2 = 7.007 with p-value = 0.030 <0.05. This figure means significant. The conclusion of the study is that there is a relationship between parenting patterns and the level of independence of mentally retarded children at the State Extraordinary School (SLB) of Bengkulu.
