Abstract
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder caused by the reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. GERD results in prolonged esophageal irritation and may increase the risk of esophageal cancer and other serious complications, potentially leading to death. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between coffee consumption and smoking habits with the incidence of GERD in Kandang Mas Village, Bengkulu City. This study used a quantitative analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. Data were collected using the GERD-Q questionnaire, coffee consumption questionnaire, and smoking habits questionnaire. The research sample consisted of residents of RT 31 and RT 53 in Kandang Mas Village. The univariate analysis described respondent characteristics based on the frequency of coffee consumption, smoking habits, and the incidence of GERD. The bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between coffee consumption and the incidence of GERD (p = 0.000), as well as a significant relationship between smoking habits and the incidence of GERD (p = 0.000). It is recommended that health institutions and the local Health Office enhance public education regarding GERD risk factors, particularly those related to coffee consumption and smoking habits.
